| When given a little extra care, it's possible to extend the life of cut flowers by several days. The two elements most responsible for the premature death of a bouquet are bright lights, either artificial or natural, and heat. |
- Flowers are happiest when given a daily drink of fresh water. Using a little flower food in the water can help preserve them as well as keep the water clean. Drinking fresh water to a flower is like breathing fresh air. Flushing the vase is a simple and effective way to change the water in a short arrangement. Place the vase under the faucet, parting the flowers slightly to let water run into the vase. Continue to let the water run until clean water is all that remains.
- If possible, re-cut stems by removing half an inch with a sharp knife. Be sure to use a sharp knife or clippers that will not crush the stems. Immediately place the stems into water.
- Keep flowers in a cool spot (65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit), away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans, or on top of televisions or radiators. (Appliances like televisions give off heat, which causes flowers to dehydrate.)
